YSL changing to SLP

There has been much speculation that late world-renown designer Yves Saint Laurent must be spinning in his grave. Four years after his passing, on June 21, 2012, the luxury fashion house bearing his name and its parent company, PPR,  announced that it would be changing its well-known moniker to Saint Laurent Paris.

Reportedly an attempt by new creative director Hedi Slimane (appointed in March 2012) to give the brand a fresh new start, it seems the name change has not been well received by the public, judging from the numerous skeptical posts and comments popping up across the internet.

The fate of the “YSL” logo is uncertain. Whether the iconic letters, designed in 1963 by graphic designer A.M. Cassandre, will be replaced with “SLP” has not be directly stated, but NY Magazine speculated that it will survive Slimane’s approach to reviving the brand.

Thoughts on YSL’s new name? Is this the best change since Christian Dior Monsieur became Dior Homme (also purported to be a drastic change initiated by Slimane during his time at Dior), or is YSL pulling an ill-fated “Crystal Pepsi” move? As always, feel free to take it to the comments.
